    Cybersecurity and Payment Fraud: A Challenge for Treasury

    An overview of current cybersecurity risks facing Treasury and effective strategies to mitigate these vulnerabilities.The presentation will take the group broadly through cybersecurity and the recent increase in attacks including the actors involved. It will then focus on the risks which directly impact the Treasury function and how to position the organization to defend against and respond to these risks.

    Kevin Kolliniatis

    Partner, Audit, KPMG LLP

    Kevin Kolliniatis is an Audit Partner in KPMG’s Ottawa office. Mr. Kolliniatis has over 19 years of experience and is the Canadian co-lead for Data and Analytics in audit. He provides advisory data and analytics services to clients in various industries. In this role, Mr. Kolliniatis assists clients by utilizing their financial and non-financial data to interpret their data and provide new insights into the operational effectiveness of their organizations.

    Mr. Kolliniatis provides multifunctional services across KPMG’s Assurance and Advisory functions, including compliance, internal control audits and IT audit. In addition, Mr. Kolliniatis delivers advisory services and provides advice on operations, control processes and financial reporting matters.

    Mr. Kolliniatis has worked extensively with a wide-range of clients and industries including Federal Government, Public Sector, Not-For-Profit and For Profit Enterprise clients. Mr. Kolliniatis holds the Chartered Accountant, Chartered Professional Accountant, and the Certified Information Systems Auditor designations and is a member of the Audit Committee for the Montfort Hospital Foundation.

    Panel Discussion: Canadian Economic Outlook Update

    Canada's current economic landscape is characterized by variation in performance of its regional economies, a vulnerable housing market, lower Canadian dollar, uncertainty resulting from recent domestic and international shocks, and challenges to key trade corridors. The annual economic panel discussion promises to be engaging by focusing on an in-depth analysis of the current key economic drivers including a discussion of global factors which will affect near term forecasts.

    Moderator: 

    Vic Kariappa

    Managing DirectorGovernment, Crown Corporations, Insurance and Financial Markets, RBC/Royal Bank.

    Vic Kariappa is responsible for managing RBC Financial Group’s business and strategy with the Government of Canada, its departments, agencies and crown corporations as well as relationship responsibilities for large corporations considered to be government corporate interests and other entities that are arm’s length from the Federal Government but created through legislation. He also oversees Provincial Government relationships and their related crown entities.

    Mr. Kariappa has responsibility for the RBC team looking after Insurance and Financial Service enterprises across Canada with respect to their Treasury and Cash Management requirements.

    Mr. Kariappa joined Royal Bank in Winnipeg in 1986 following his graduation from the University of Manitoba where he obtained his Masters Degree in Business Administration. He also has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Calgary. Mr. Kariappa is a member of the Board of Directors of Water Aid Canada.

    Michael Gregory, CFA

    Deputy Chief Economist & Head of U.S. Economics/Managing Director, BMO Capital Markets

    Michael Gregory manages the team responsible for forecasting and analyzing the North American economy and financial markets,

    Michael began his career in economics with Royal Bank of Canada in Montreal in the mid-1980s, before moving to Toronto to work in RBC's foreign exchange and money market research group. He eventually moved along the yield curve and across the border, joining the fixed income strategy group at Lehman Brothers in New York City in the mid-1990s. Returning to Canada at the end of 2001, Michael headed up the Financial Services Analysis team at Bank of Montreal, focusing on regulatory and industry restructuring issues, prior to joining BMO Capital Markets Economics in 2004. He moved to Chicago in late 2013, providing research support for the U.S. and Canadian fixed income business and working with the Global Fixed Income Strategy team, before returning to Toronto last year.

    Michael is a graduate of Concordia University and the University of Western Ontario. Michael also completed doctoral studies at Fordham University in New York City. He holds a Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

     

    Ian Lee

    Associate Professor in the Sprott School of Business, Carleton University

    Ian Lee graduated with his PhD in Public Policy at Carleton University in 1989 focusing on deregulation and privatization in Canada and the U.K. Prior to his PhD studies, Dr. Lee was employed for 10 years in the financial services sector.

    Ian Lee has been with the Sprott School of Business since 1988 and teaches strategic management and international business strategy. Dr. Lee was the founding MBA Director in the Sprott School from 2007-10.  He was the director of the Bachelor of International Business in the Sprott School from 1996-98.       

    Ian Lee is a frequent analyst in the media including CBC's 'On the Money' and 'Power & Politics', CBC Radio (Syndication), Global TV, CTV News Channel, BNN radio and print media. He has published approximately 45 Op-Eds including several articles in the Globe and Mail, New York Times, Financial Post and National Post.
